Diesel engine plays an important role in industry; the fault diagnosis of diesel engine is the focus of the research domain in mechanics fault diagnosis. With the successive development of modern industry, the running status monitoring and fault diagnosis technology of diesel engine is gaining increasing attention, and it has gained large development. The methods and ways of fault diagnosis have become abundant and how to use new techniques to carry out diesel engine fault diagnosis is a permanent topic.According to the current situation and developing trend of domestic and foreign diesel engine fault diagnosis, combined with the need of practical project, the diesel engine fault diagnosis based on crankshaft instantaneous angular acceleration is carried out; Principles and feasibility of this method are studied theoretically. What's more, the advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. This method of diesel engine fault diagnosis is feasible theoretically. While the fault diagnosis system using this method is rare, just because the crankshaft instantaneous angular acceleration measurement is demanding, such as, good frequency response, high precision. In this project the main hardware are ATmega162 and PDIUSBD12. ATmega162 is AVR micro-controller of ATMEL Corporation with high performance and high speed. PDIUSBD12 is the product of Philips and it's of USB1.1 standard. Micro-controller was programed to measure the width of engine running speed signal successively, via PDIUSBD12 these measured data are transmitted to PC, according to some algorithm, for PC program to analyze, process and display angular acceleration, thus diagnose diesel engine. In the latter part of this dissertation, the specific design scheme and the principle of every software and hardware part of this system are discussed. The hardware falls into two parts: data acquisition module and USB communication module.
