Focusing on the requirement of the traffic safety in China, and basing on the application situation in China and abroad, synthesizing principles and methods of digital image processing, a method of measuring the leading vehicle distance is proposed in this paper.The method adopts monocular CCD video as input device and processes the input image using the method of edge enhancement and morphological transformation. It gets the result of lane detection by segmentation and gets the result of obstacle detection using the method of decision tree. At last, it measures the leading vehicle distance based on the calculating model of inverse perspective mapping.Finally, the experiment result prove that the method of measuring the leading vehicle distance by monocular camera can work reliably, judging the development trend of intelligent transportation system and intelligent vehicle technologies, it is a viable method to calculate the leading vehicle distance.
