With the development of computer technology and automation technology, the research of automiatic collision avodidance is valuable to the safty of navigation, promotion of shipping economics, reduction of loss of lives and possessions as well as protection of ocean environment.For anti-collision research, researchers have introduced numerous approaches: fuzzy mathematical methods, neural network methods, genetic algorithms, expert system technology and methods of artifitial intelligence, and so on. This paper introduces differential game theory and studies its application in matitime anti-collision situations.Differential game is a branch of mathematics with wide and prosperous applications. Since 1971, after American mathematician A.Friedman introduced discrete approximation sequence methods to establish the values of differential game and exixtence of saddle point, solid foundation differential game theory has been laid in mathematics. As an effective means to represent conflict situation, differential game theory is widely applied, particularly in the area of military confrontations.Differential game theory is an effective mathematical tool for solving confrontational, highly competitive, dynamic and continuous system problems with two or more parties in conflict, competition or for an effective cooperation.Collision avoidance problem of two vessels on close-quarter situation was studied. Mathematical model using differential game theory for collision avoidance was formulated. The collision avoidance problem on urgent situation was converted into differential games problem.
