An airfoil shape design method is developed by combining Genetic Algorithm and compound form and solved by viscous flow analysis. The method is applied to search an airfoil geometry with improved aerodynamic performance at single or multiple design-point while the specified design constraints being satisfied.Genetic Algorithms can search the solution globally including many local optimums. But if the search space is too large, Genetic Algorithm have inherent difficulties to converge in the global optimum with an adequate precision and a quick efficient. On the other hand ,the compound form method follows a different strategy, being able to find local optimum with great precision. To improve efficiency of optimization by means of genetic algorithm, a hybrid Genetic Algorithm and compound method in aerodynamic optimization is constructed by combining compound form method with genetic algorithm. The interaction of both algorithms improves the solutions gained by Genetic Algorithms and makes the searching converge to the global solution with fewer iterations.Based on the study of the method, the hybrid method is used to carry out single objective and multiple objectives aerodynamic optimization design of airfoil. The flow field is solved by Renolds-averaged N-S equations. The examples indicate that the hybrid method is stable and high efficient and the designed airfoil has a high quality. It is proved that the hybrid method is valuable on project application.
