The safety navigation of ships has been an important issue for scholars in the field of navigation study. With the rapid development of shipping economy, there are an increasing number of ships shuttling on the water ways all over the world. As a result, the collision avoidance of ships gets more and more important in maintaining the safety navigation of ships. In view of that, IMO, all the coastal countries, and scholars in this field have been committing themselves to the study on reducing the occurrences of ship's collision, with achievements in various aspects. The technologic study that focusing on geometrical collision avoidance has always been the keystone in the study of ship's collision avoidance. The invention of ARPA radar resulted in a fundamental change in the study of geometrical collision avoidance, which turned automatic collision avoidance into reality. In recent years, researchers in and abroad have stated their respective views, and designed several systems of automatic collision avoidance on the basis of geometrical analysis. However, due to the inherent defects of radar, ARPA cannot provide the precise data which is necessary for automatic collision avoidance. These defects restricted the practical appliance of automatic collision avoidance system. The application of ship's AIS system in recent years has brought about a through change to the approaches of getting information about meeting ships, from detecting by the radar itself to the automatic receiving of the ships, resulting in the share of information among meeting ships. In the study of geometrical collision avoidance, the Predicted Area of Collision(PAD) is advantageous in that it can be utilized to identify collision dangers directly, Quickly and exactly. It can provide the range of course change for preventing collision as well as to observe multi-objects simultaneously. But due to the inherent defects of the PAD model and radar, it is difficult to apply the Radar-based PAD fully in the existing practical use at sea. With the data provided by the AIS system in combination with the concept of ship's domain in the field of traffic engineering, this thesis aims to carry out further study on ship's PAD based on the concept of ship domain with the data provided by the AIS system and attempted to visualize it through computer. The thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter is "Preface", which mainly...
