As a kind of hydraulic structures,sluices are widely applied in water conservancy projects. The foundation seepage is the key factors in the design, construction, and safe running of the sluices. The destroy of the sluice foundation will inevitably taken place if the control over the foundation seepage was improperly operated, thus, the severe accident of the structures is most likely occurred. In recent years, as more and more attention is paid on the safety of the sluice construction, the foundation seepage has become the important items in assessing the social, economic and environmental benefit of the water conservancy projects. Therefore, the scientific analysis and computation for the foundation seepage of the sluice dams will be of very importance and has much practical values.Basically speaking, the seepage computation for the sluice foundation occupies an important position in the design and operation of water gates. The seepage analysis provides the necessary reference for selecting the proper seepage control methods and evaluating the safety and reliability of the sluice projects. By system analysis and study for the foundation seepage of Shaoxian sluice, this paper provides the reasonable assessment for the seepage safety of this project. The study methods and conclusions of this paper will show practical instruction and help for the operation and management of the Shaoxian sluice project, also will be helpful and valuable for the design of this kind of projects.In recent years, the seepage computation for the sluices foundation become common, but it is often considered only in the design stage. As a matter of fact, the analysis and appraisal for the seepage effectiveness of the seepage facilities is rarely seen in the operation stage.According to the criterion of sluice design(SL265-2001), the seepage length is checked to make sure it meets the standards and the seepage facilities is reasonable. Method of locale observation for the foundation seepage of Shaoxian sluice is specifically presented. Based on the locale observation data of the second half year in 2004, the dependability of the observation data is systematically analysized, and the running status of the main observation equipment——piezometer tube is judged in this paper. Five situation of seepage of Shaoxian sluice foundation under different combination of water level between up and low reaches are respectively computed by the theory of improved resistance method and the numerical analysis software of Geo-Slope which based on finite element method.According the locale observation esult and the calculation result, the calculation precision of improved resistance method and numerical analysis method is compared and analysised. To optimize the depth of the underground continuous walls of Shaoxian sluice foundation, eleven working conditions with different depth of underground continuous walls has been selected, also the flow field of the sluice foundation seepage has been caculated. Based on several aspects, such as the change size of the seepage water levels, the ratio between performance and cost and so on, the depth of the underground continuous walls is optimized.
