Acoustic emission (AE) technique (AET) is a progressively mature non-destructive testing method which was begun in 1960s.AET has been widely used in petrifaction equipment testing and structural integrity evaluation. This paper bases on the principle of acoustic emission testing, the features of acoustic emission testing technique are summarized. After an introduction to the history and present situation of acoustic emission testing technology home and abroad, the authors have made an review of the applications of acoustic emission technique in pressure vessel and atmospheric metal storage tanks.Pressure vessels should be tested and monitored in the course of manufacture, regular maintenance and long-date use so as to avoid some malignant accidents, such as great injuries and deaths of the living body and the heavy lose of equipment and property.A method of pressure vessels on-line detecting is brought forward by using acoustic emission technology in signal collecting and analyzing. The method on testing points arranging and data processing is discussed. Atmospheric metal storage tanks take important part in storing and transferring crude oil and dangerous chemicals, the main reason of tank failure in use is the bottom leak resulted from corrosion.According to the research overcomes of Acoustic Emission (AE) testing and assessment technology on atmospheric tanks,This paper introduces the detection research of vertical tank bottoms which are in different corrosion conditions using acoustic emission technology was introduced. Results showed that the structure integrity of vertical tank bottoms can be assessed through the technology.
