LIBS(laser-induced plasma spectroscopy) which is one method of atomic emission spectroscopy(AES) is a springing up detection method recently. LIBS is the only one technology that can be used to detect any kinds of sample (including solid, liquid, powder, gas, etc.) in almost any environment until now. At the same time, the method can be used in almost any environments such as in the hazardous and innocuous environments. As a analytical method, LIBS also has many advantages which include rapidly and real-time analysis, simplicity, untouched and in situ detection, etc. Because of so many advantages, LIBS is seen as a versatile method. In 2004, Dr. James Winefordner, a world-renowned analytical spectroscopist, described the LIBS as "a future super star" in a article in the area of analytical technology. Recently, LIBS is not only used to analyze the chemical composition of a sample, but also used to many areas such as: environmental detection, industrial measurement, geological application, cultural relic protection, nuclear industry, special detection, oceanic science, surface's analysis, etc.Currently, the research in the LIBS is widely developed in foreign countries. The research include not only LIBS' basic theories and characters, but also the application of the LIBS method and the instrument manufacturing. But domestic research in LIBS is less developed, and the research is mainly focused on the basic theories. Fewer people study on the application of the LIBS technology and the LIBS instrument. We can judge that the domestic LIBS is just beginning, and the market of LIBS instrument will be very large. So research of the LIBS instrument will be very meaningful. This article mainly focused on the introduction of a LIBS instrument which is based on a mini fiber optic spectrometer whose detector is a normal CCD (charged-coupled devices). After introducing how to build the LIBS system, the parameters of the system is illustrated through the experiment on Fe alloy. The article is composed of five chapters. In chapter 1, something about the history and the current development of LIBS is introduced. And then characteristic of LIBS method including its advantages and disadvantages is presented too. In chapter 2, the main content is about the basic principle how the laser-induced plasma spectrum is produced. Then something about the spectrum are introduced, which include the main factor influencing the spectrum and the basic knowledge of quantitative LIBS analysis. In chapter 3 we will know the components that build the LIBS system, which include a laser, a spectrometer, a circuit controlling the system and collecting the data, the optic system and a computer. At the same time, all the components' functions to the system are analyzed too.In chapter 4, the process of building and testing the LIBS system is introduced. Then experiment on the Fe alloy is made using the LIBS system. The spectrum of the Fe alloy is collected and analyzed. As a result of the experiment, we can figure out how the system behaves. The experiment can prove that the grating spectrometer behave very well in the system.A conclusion is made in the chapter 5. The advantages and disadvantages of the LIBS system are discussed, and then point out what should be done in the future to make the system better.
