Low frequency oscillations may weaken the damping of power system, and affect the power transfer ability and stable operation of power system. A traditional and effective solution to this problem is wide area application of the additional power system stabilizers (PSS) at Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR) on generators in the power system, in order to increase the damping associated with attentioned oscilating modes.Based on an investigation of the applications of Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS), it is summarized the state of the art of wide-area damping controller in this thesis. Furthermore, it is proposed a practical model of wide-area damping controller in which use active power on liaison lines as an input signal of traditional PSS, inorder to improve the damping characteristics of cared oscilating modes. Moreover, the model is programmed in commercial power system analysis simulation tools. It shows that, based on the simulation and analysis of the benchmark system with 3 generators and an industry operation power system, the damping behaviors of the systems can be improved obviously through the application of wide-area damping controller on the traditional PSS blocks.
