Recently, expansion in the scale of power systems and development of power sources, especially large units connected directly to the 500-kV systems, are leading to an increase in fault current. In the future, it is quite likely that the fault current at the interconnection of such power systems may exceed the interrupting capacity of the circuit breakers.Significant research should be focused on short-circuit current limiting as increasing fault current greatly reduces ability of power grid to function. In this paper, an optimization algorithm based on integer programming is proposed. This algorithm, in which behaviors of breaker switching resulting in different grid structures are simulated by 0-1 variables, is efficient and suitable for finding the optimal solutions to short-circuit current limiting.
