Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is a kind of important equipment in the power system and the monitoring of its partial discharges (PD) has become a very important research area in the electrical power research institutes and universities. There are many disadvantages in the centralized monitoring system, such as the limitation of motoring capability, the mass work of laying lots of electric cables, the distortion of the analog signals in transmissions, difficulties of expending and maintenance , and heavy tasks in the host computer etc. Aiming to solving these problem, This paper first analyses the characteristics of distributed monitoring system, then puts forward the method of system achievement and expending for a distributed monitoring systems for Partial Discharge on GIS.Based on the distribute system's method, this paper develops the first intelligent sensor basing on ultrasonic method for GIS's PD monitoring .This intelligent sensor not only the has basic function of detecting ultrasonic wave, but also support some advanced functions, such as PD's information collecting, digital signal processing, CANBUS communication, remote surveying and settings parameter etc. The intelligent sensor has established the basis for the distributed monitoring systems of Partial Discharge on GIS. Based on the intelligent sensor, a distributed monitoring system for PD in GIS is achieved, which is whole digitization, supports more than 100 intelligent sensors based on CANBUS, can achieve the functions such as data transmission, remote management, command releasing, the state monitoring and parameter setup. The intelligence sensor follows the CANDB communication protocol, supporting the "plug and play" function in this system, so it is convenient to expand and maintain. At last ,this system is validated on a real GIS model and some positive result is obtained.
