Chain transmission mechanism (CTM) is key execution unit of chain gun for ammunition feeding, breech opening and locking. Therefore the design quality of CTM will bring effects on the overall performance of the artillery system. The modem design theory and methodology named by virtual prototyping is applied in dynamics analysis and evaluation for CTM in this paper. The main research work includes:Firstly, based on analyzing the structural features of chain gun automatic mechanism, the scheme of functional design and structural design is put forward for CTM. The overall structure parameters of gear reducer parts, chain transmission parts and breach mechanism parts are determined. Then the next research step will be moved to virtual prototype of CTM.Secondly, by use of parametric software package Pro/E, 3D solid model of the key parts such as chain wheel, guide wheel, internal and external link, sector gear, reduction gear and breech frame is constructed. The 3D solid model of CTM is assembled according to the real assembly relationship. The conversion technology is discussed for transformation from 3D solid model to multi-body dynamics model and finite elements model.Thirdly, multi-body dynamics modeling theory of ADAMS is introduced. Based on structural features and working principle of chain transmission, gear pairs, breech-opening and locking, the corresponding multi-body dynamics model is set up. The factors such as contact and impact between the components, elastic deformation of the shaft are taken into detailed consideration. The law of movement and force of main components are obtained by numerical calculation.Lastly, the multi-body dynamics model of CTM is set up from the system point of view. The process of CTM can be simulated by ADAMS Script Control Commands, and then the dynamics response law of CTM can be attained. Some structural parameters are selected as design variables to investigate their effects on the dynamic response. This method can provide qualitative and quantitative basis for overall design and structural design of such product.
