This study belongs to the research field of virtual plant. The modeling and simulation of plant underground part of cutting propagation is investigated.Cutting propagation is a asexual plant propagation technology, it has the advantages of faster growth, earlier flowering and maintaining the female characteristics, etc. According to selecting plant organ type, cutting ways include shoot cutting, root cutting, bud cutting and leaf cutting. Shoot cutting is most easily mastered and widely utilized. In this paper, shoot cutting is mainly focused on.From the perspective of rooting relevance, underground organs of cutting plant generally consist of stem, adventitious bud, callus, root, etc. The growth features exist in callus forming on the incision of stem accompanying with dilatancy of stem base, and then the adventitious root branching from adventitious bud, bark and callus. Adventitious root has no fixed position; and its topological structure is also irregular. The existing plant root simulation model can not be used to simulate the growth characteristics of cutting plant. Whereas no relevant research literature has been found, it is of academic significance to develop simulation model of underground organ of cutting plant, in addition, it is also of importance in heuristic method to research the cutting seedling rooting rate, survival rate, adventitious root numbers and length, lateral root numbers and length by using this model.In this paper, firstly, some typical plants are used in cutting propagation experiment for observing the morphological characteristics and change of the underground organs, and confirming the parameters and methods of the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the underground sections.Secondly, based on architecture modeling theory, fractal axes tree is proposed to describe topological structure of cutting plant underground organs, and space quadtree is designed to store its 3D geometric structure. Growth model, visualization model and statistics model are developed by combining with growth features of underground organ of cutting plant.Furthermore, based on mentioned models, simulation system is developed by Visual C++platform and Direct3D graphic interface, which can be used to simulate the growth of cutting plant underground organs dynamically. System inputs are geometric and growth parameters, the outputs include 3D visualization and numerical simulation results.Finally, four typical garden flowers plant (rose, jasmine, willow, and chrysanthemum) are introduced. Materials and methods of cutting experiment and obtaining geometric and growth parameters are described. Related data is acquired and used as input of simulation system, and then the 3D image and numerical simulation data are outputed. Results show:(1) Morphological characteristics of simulaiton are similar to real cutting plant underground organs. (2) Simulation system can simulate stem dilatancy, callus forming and adventitious rooting. (3) Relative error value between measurement data and simulation data is acceptable, maximal error is 9.09%, minimal error is 2.55%, and average error is 6.71%. The precision of simulation results is tolerable.It is concluded that this simulation system is suitable to woody and herbaceous plant cutting simulation, and the model is universal and valuable.
