Ecological benefits of commen gargen plants in Shenzhen were studied. On the basies of three seasons's work, the specis'ecological benefits,such as carbon fixation and oxygen release,temperature drop and humidity increase,was measured with the method of infrared gas-exchange. In autumn, the characteristics of light utilization for 21 garden plant species was studied with the method of infrared gas-exchange,the content of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves was measured at the same season .their capacity of shade tolorance has been estimated on the basies of analyzing the light compensation point, light saturation point and the content of photosynthetic pigments. The results will provide guidelines for selection of garden plants species in Shenzhen.Major results are as follows: 1. The capacity of carbon fixation and oxygen release for 28 garden plant species through whole growth period was lined up from more to less . 2. The capacity of carbon fixation and oxygen release for 28 garden plant species was classified three groups with the weight of carbon fixation by one square meter leaf through one year. The capacity of carbon fixation and oxygen release is best which carbon fixation is more than 3500g ; The capacity is better which carbon fixation is more than 2500g and less than 3500g; The capacity is common which carbon fixation is less than 2500g. 3. The capacity of temperature drop and humidity increase for 28 garden plant species through whole growth period was lined up from more to less. 4. The capacity of temperature drop and humidity increase for 28 garden plant species was classified three groups with the weight of water release by one square meter leaf through one year. The capacity of temperature drop and humidity increase is best which water release is more than 350g ; The capacity is better which water release is more than 250g and less than 350g; The capacity is common which water release is less than 250g. 5. The shade-tolerance of 21 garden plant species was lined up according to their light compensation point . 6. According to their light compensation point and light safuration point, making reference with chlorophyll a/b ,the capacity of shade-tolerance for 21 garden plant species was classified three groups. The capacity of shade-tolerance is best with lower light compensation point and lower light safuration point,the capacity is better with lower light compensation point and higher light safuration point,the capacity is bad with higher light compensation point and higher light safuration point.
