South China sika deer(Cervus nippon kopschi)is regarded as the first-class animal under protection in China, presently, there are two groups of them mainly distribute in two areas, one live in the area between Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve (Lin'an, Zhejiang province) and Wanjia village(Ningguo, Anhui province), the other live in Taohongling Nature Reserve, the northest of Jiangxi Province. In Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve, the population amount of C.n.kopschi is about 130, and the average density 1.86 per kilometer square. Focusing on species and grazing part of foraging plants and forage biomass of C.n.kopschi in the Reserve, the study researches step by step—investigation, observation, identification and determination, in oder to offer a scientific basis to evaluate the habitat of C.n.kopschi, and work out the measures to manage and protect them. With the methods of direct observation of feeding, evidence of feeding on forage, feeding experiment and fecal microscopic analysis, the study researches C.n.kopschi in Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve step by step—investigation, observation, record and identification, focuses on species and grazing part of foraging plants which are the traces left by C.n.kopschi. And by using methods of strip sampling and square sampling, the study also determines the forage biomass of C.n.kopschi. The results show that species of foraging plants of C.n.kopschi are 174 kinds, including 101 kinds of herbs, 56 kinds of shrubs and 17 kinds of trees. As for C.n.kopschi, the stems, leaves and fruits of the herbs and the fresh leaves, buds, branches and fruits of the woody are the main grazing parts. In the areas of Maxiao, Qianqingtang, Dapingxi, Daochangping, Luoshijian and Xiaopingxi, the forage biomass of C.n.kopschi is 93.28 gram per meter square in middle February to middle March, and in middle August to middle September, the biomass is 118.68 gram per meter square. There is a great difference in forage biomass distribution that during middle February to middle March the highest one is 102.50 gram per meter square (in Dapingxi), the lowest one is 82.92 gram per meter square (in Xiaopingxi), and during middle August to middle September the highest one is 126.27 gram per meter square (in Qianqingtang), the lowest one is 105.92 gram per meter square (in Xiaopingxi). The study reveals that species and grazing part of foraging plants and grazed biomass of C.n.kopschi in Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve have a great difference while the season changing, in summer and autumn, C.n.kopschi graze lots of herbs, especially Gramineae, Leguminosae, Cyperaceae and Asteraceae take the great amount, but in winter and spring, the species of foraging plants C .n.kopschi graze only a little, because most of the plants are withered or covered with snow. The thesis also shows that shrubs are the important food to C.n.kopschi, so the suggestion of planting appropriate shrubs in Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve is necessary to the development of C.n.kopschi.
