Background:Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Cubital Tunnel Syndrome aschronic nerve compression syndrome is often common in clinical. The primalsymptoms include finger numbness, paresthesia and dysfunction, which are dueto the median nerve or ulnar nerve in carpal canal or cubital canal compressed forVarious reasons. Most of clinical physicians depended on the medical history, symptoms, signs and neural electrophysiology to diagnose, but short of peripheralnerve entrapment morphological changes and imaging evidences. With thedevelopment of ultrasound equipment and technology, the running, continuityand morphological changes of damaged nerve can be intuitively displayed byultrasonography, which aslo can offer valuable information for clinical diagnosisand surgery. Objective:To evaluate the application of high-frequency ultrasonography inobservation of sonographic changes in carpal and cubital tunnel compression. MethodMethods:The median nerves and ulnar nerves were observed byhigh-frequency ultrasonography in 27 patients with suspected carpal tunnelcompression(CTS1 ),32 patients with suspected cubital tunel compression(CTS2 )and 80 normal contol volunteers(control group). The anteroposterior diameters, transverse diameters and cross sectional areas(CSA) of median nerves and ulnarnerves were measured and compared between patients and control group.Thecorrelation with motor nerve conductive velocity(MNCV) were then analyzed. Results:The diameter and CSA of median nerves in CTS1 and diameter andCSA of ulnar nerves in CTS2 were greater respectively than those in controlgroup(P<0.01).The correlation coefficients between the diameter and MNCV ofmedian nerves in CTS1 and between CSA and MNCV of ulnar nerves in CTS2were -0.76 and -0.80 respectively.Conclusion:High-frequency ultrasonography offers valuable diagnosticinformation of detailed imaging changes and important application value of thecurative effect evaluation for its treatrment in carpal and cubital tunnelcompression.
