Tchaikovsky's symphonies feature emotional expressions and philosophical implications. Among them, his elegant and melodious waltzes, a symbol of love and life, are perfect reflections of the composer's individuality. This research, taking the example of Tchaikovsky's symphony No.1, No.3, No.5 and No.6, is an attempt of a detailed and thorough analysis of waltzes in these four pieces from perspectives of melody, rhythm, musical structure, orchestration, style, and ways of elaborating musical topics. It is also an attempt to seek his extremely individual expressions of music as well as wealth of emotions hidden under the genre as simple as waltz.Enlightened by ideas from aesthetics and philosophy, the author discusses the philosophical implications arising from the harmony and contrast of waltzes and other movements. It is a contrast of musical images:positive powers and negative powers, with the former as represented by kindness, justice, light and ideal and the latter darkness, depression, terror and death. It is also a contradiction of kindness and evil, love and hate, life and death, happiness and pain, ideal and reality, light and darkness. These implications highlight the dramatic and tragic features of symphoniesAll the discussions aim at helping listeners revalue waltz from a more extensive perspective, pay more attention to the unique artistic expressions of waltzes in Tchaikovsky's symphonies, and at arousing a deeper understanding of these masterpieces, thus completing the whole aesthetic process of musical appreciation.
