The Great Gatsby: The American Dream Woven With Literary Symbolism

The Great Gatsby, the famous author of the United States, F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel of epoch-making significance. Numerous comments have been made on it and various approaches have been employed to examine artistic achievement and profound social meaning of the novel. The present thesis intends to study the "American dream" woven with symbols in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby in the light of general perspectives of symbolism. It is found that Fitzgerald records the American Dream in The Great Gatsby with great creation and emotion. The nature of the American Dream is indicated by the symbols of color:the "beautiful" dream and the "illusive" dream. His criticism of American Dream and sympathy of the people who are in blind pursuit of the dream are highlighted by his use of symbols. We are safe to say that it is symbols that embody the central theme:the American Dream.
