A Passage to India is a most well-known novel of the famous British writer Edward Morgan Forster. The thesis aims to probe into the following questions with Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin's theory of dialogism:In colonial India, what are the causes of disconnection in English and Indian groups? What are the causes of disconnection between English and Indian individuals, like Fielding, Mrs. Moore, Adela and Aziz? How does the Indian individual Aziz accomplish his subject construction in disconnection with the English? What is the significance of dialogue to his subject construction? Consequently, the thesis applies methods of positive and negative argumentation. From the negative side, chapterⅠand chapterⅡanalyze the causes of disconnection in English-Indian groups and individuals in colonial India for disobeying premises and conditions of dialogue in Bakhtin's theory of dialogism; from the positive side, chapterⅢanalyzes Aziz's subject construction in disconnection from the significance of dialogue to individual subject construction in Bakhtin's theory of dialogism. Therefore, the thesis draws conclusions as follows:in colonial India, disconnection in English-Indian groups and individuals negatively illustrates the significance of dialogic relationship to human existence, i.e. relationship of individuals and groups, self and otherness; Aziz's subject construction in disconnection positively illustrates the significance of dialogue to individual existence. The thesis's originality lies in focusing on the Indian individual Aziz and analyzing the motif of disconnection in A Passage to India with Bakhtin's theory of dialogism from the perspective of dialogue's significance to human existence. Needless to say, A Passage to India is a best novel deserved to be studied with Bakhtin's theory of dialogism, which reveals profound inspiration to relationships in individuals, groups, nations and races in the trend of globalization nowadays.
