Astudy Of Morphemes Diagrammatic Iconicity

Language iconicity provides a perfect complement and challenge to Saussure's arbitrariness in linguistic sign. In recent years, the cognition functional grammarian expands and deepens Peirce's idea of sign iconicity. And Hyman's research boasts the stupendous affect, he defines language iconicity as: when one language expressions in the contour, the length, complex as well as the relation between composition elements are parallel with the concept, the experience or the communicative strategy of the codes in this expression, we considerer that this language expressions is of iconicity. In the home, Xu Guozhang for the first time translated"iconicity"into"象似性"in 1988. Wang Yin definite language iconicity as the mapping phenomenon between the language sign in the sound, the shape or the structure and its signified, and he demonstrated several categories of iconicity in syntax from diagrammatic iconicity, such as distance iconicity, quantity iconicity, sequence iconicity, markednes iconicity, topic iconicity, sentence pattern iconicity and filtration iconicity. Besides the syntax, many linguists already demonstrated language iconicity from the level of vocabulary, discourse and pragmatics, which provides a perfect complement to arbitrariness.Vocabulary iconicity is demonstrated by many scholars mainly from aspects of pronunciation, calligraphy, etymology, morpheme and word order, but lack of systematic and deep exploration in the process of demonstrating morphemes iconicity. On the basis of predecessor's study of morphemes iconicity, this study makes further exploration of it. This article take the new words in the textbook of Reading and Writing Course of New Horizon College English as research materials to conduct this study, and analyze their iconicity from the level of the roots, affixes and morphemes order in term of vocabulary diagrammatic iconicity. Firstly, we study the roots iconicity from two aspects; they are root iconicity between words and root iconicity within a word, and try to make further classifications of them on the basis of roots semantic of the data collected. Secondly, the affixes iconicity is studied from the level of prefixes iconicity and suffixes iconicity, and we will make further classification of the two levels in terms of semantic and grammatical function of the data collected. Finally, we will study the Morphemes order iconicity from horizontal syntagmatic relations and vertical paradigmatic relations.According to the study of affixes iconicity, roots iconicity and morphemes order iconicity, the author find that there is deeper iconic relationship between morphemes and words. On the basis of the role that roots played in the involvement of polysemy, function iconicity, state iconicity, property iconicity, form iconicity and motion form iconicity are classified; in terms of the semantic function of prefixes and markedness of part of speech of suffixes, negative iconicity of prefixes, attitude iconicity of prefixes, time and space iconicity of prefixes, degree iconicity of prefixes, number iconicity of prefixes, and suffixes iconicity of nouns, suffixes iconicity of adjectives, suffixes iconicity of verbs and suffixes iconicity of adverbs are categorized. Finally, because the allocation of morphemes order maps human thought and cognitive order, and the author find that morphemes order iconicity mainly involves syntagmatic iconicity of morpheme order and paradigmatic iconicity of morpheme order. These deeper classification and analysis from angle of diagrammatic iconicity further demonstrated the motivational or iconic relationship between morphemes and word meaning, language form and content, the research range of iconicity being deepen. The author expects to bring theoretical and practical enlightenment to English vocabulary teaching and learning, as well as has a benefit to enrich research angle of semantics.
