Doctoral education, elite education in other words, represents the highest level of tertiary education. A tutor should play the role as an instructor, a friend as well as a guide, whose influence and personality charm nurture their students mildly and subtly. However, the basic role of a tutor as an educator has been more or less consumed by the tutor's increasing engagement in politics and commerce in practical situation. The title of"boss"for a tutor and"labor"for a Ph.D candidate has been widely accepted and their relationship seems to approach indifferent and utilitarian. Practical situation is that tutors tend to enroll students without actually directing them during their doctorate study, which intensifies the contradictions between the two parties. Therefore, the present study believes that the alienation of tutor-student relationship in doctoral education is to a great extent a consequence of the alienation of tutors'roles. The paper is mainly composed of two parts. The first part will introduce the research design, including Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. The second part, body part of the thesis, is comprised of Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. Chapter 1 is a review of previous literature concerning two major issues: 1) tutor-student relationship in doctorate education in China; 2) tutor-student interaction, academic tutoring and daily life in doctorate education in America. Chapter 2 will briefly introduce the theoretical basis of the present study, propose the research hypotheses, indicate the expected roles of tutors and graduate students, and finally describe the research methodology and research content of the present study. In Chapter 3, the empirical study on the role dislocation in tutor-student interaction, academic tutoring and daily life in doctorate education will be elaborated on.
