Block diagram design (BDD) was widely used in calendars and advertisements from the late 19th to the early 20th in China. Having inherited the pith of the ethnic cultures and included the western designing features during this period, the BDD has formed an original character in modern commercial advertisements.The BDD showed different features with the development of calendar advertisements in different periods. The application of the BDD in calendar advertisements for the commercial plane printing advertisements such as newspapers, magazines, trademarks and so on also reflected the common recognition for the effect of decoration on the commercial plane printing advertisements. In this essay, the applications of modeling plastic arts language with graphics, colors and words in advertisements for the BDD in calendars have been investigated, the effects of the BDD on the advertisements have been analyzed and the deeper art and design connotation in the BDD with a strongly forming sensation has been explored. The essay has revealed one aspect of the evolvement and innovation of Chinese traditional Art and Design during sina-western culture merging processes and enlightened people to have a new look on the modern design in China.
