Damp-heat syndrome is originated from dampness and heat, belonging to pathogenic Ying and Yang respectively. Dampness, categorized in pathogenic Ying, is downward, thick, and greasy in nature, and it could easily block the flowing of Qi. On the other hand, heat, categorized in pathogenic Yang, is upward, with a tendency to consume the body fluid, to damage the Qi, to stir up the liver wind, and to accelerate the circulation of the blood. The combination of dampness and heat is similar to mixing oil with flour, which is hard to separate, and results in a complex and chronicle disease. Xue Shang Bai said, "Most of the damp-heat syndrome is in YangMing and TaiYing meridians," which concluded damp-heat syndrome is caused by the dysfunction of Middle Jiao, where spleen and stomach are located. Many theories of the cause of damp-heat syndrome are also focus on Middle Jiao. Wu Ju Tong stated, "Compared to other kinds of warm disease, damp-heat syndrome is a chronic yet severe disease, and it seldom invades Upper Jiao." However, in clinical studies, "Invasion of damp-heat pathogen in the lung" syndrome is not uncommon, such as the SARS outbreak in 2003 and Type A H1N1 flu could induce this type of syndrome. This thesis starts from summing up the related dissertations, and develops a theory on the causes, pathogenesis, differentiation, and treatment of "invasion of damp-heat pathogen in the lung" syndrome. The author scrutinizes and analyzes the discourses regarding related subjects from 1985 to 2011, and establishes a pattern of cause, pathogenesis, and differentiation and corresponding treatment of "invasion of damp-heat pathogen in the lung" syndrome. This thesis is consisted of two parts:Part 1 takes Type A H1N1 flu and mycoplasmal pneumonia as examples, explores the relationships between these two diseases and damp-heat syndrome regarding the causes, pathogenesis, differentiation and treatment, and elaborates many doctors'clinical case studies.Part 2 is theory studies. First study is to understand the pattern of differentiation and treatment of damp-heat pathogen in the lung, explore the association between lung and other organs in terms of physiology, furthermore, interprets the occurrence, development, and therapeutic method in terms of pathology, analyzes the common clinical syndromes, the principles of treatments and the characteristics of differentiation. Second study is to single out cough and dyspnea due to damp-heat invading the lung system, elaborating the origin of the name, causes, pathogenesis, differentiations, and classifications. In addition, the author studies the inter-relation between acute contagious SARS and cough and dyspnea triggered by damp-heat pathogen, and combines a board clinical application. In summary, this thesis is intended to conclude a pattern of the invasion of damp-heat in the lung system through theory interpretation and case studies, in order to provide a new perspective on how to treat such disease.
