Ulcerative colitis (UC) is also named nonspecific ulcerative colitis, which is a kind of digestive tract diseases with the principal pathological characteristics of chronic inflammation and ulcer. Lesions are mainly located in the colon mucosa, also often implicates rectum and far colon, but can also extends to near colon, even entire colon. The main clinical manifestations are continual or recurrent abdominal pain, diarrhea with pus-blood. Course of UC is often lengthy, and conditions of UC patients makes large difference. Also UC recrudesces time after time and relates to colon cancer. Until now, the etiology of UC has'nt identified in modern medicine, that is considered as a kind of immunological disease commonly. As effective drugs, aminosalicy acid, corticosteroid and immunomodulator can treat UC to some extent, but they have heavy side effects. Therefore, UC ranks among refractory diseases of modern times by world health organization.Although there is no certain disease that is totally corresponding to UC in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), but its symptoms are similar with some diseases recorded by doctors in ancient times such as "changpi", "xiexie" "xiali", "jiuli", "xiuxili" etc. TCM believes that deficiency of spleen is its root, wet-heat in superficiality, blood stasis inpenetrates the disease all the time, inner-carbuncle is its partial pathologic manifestations. Excess syndrome is primary, and deficiency syndrome is secondary during its paroxysm; while deficiency syndrome is primary, and surplus evil is not ridded completely during its remission. TCM shows advantages in syndrome differentiation and regulating body from the whole. Professor Jiang sums up aseries of effective TCM treatment of UC under years of clinical experience. It showed better efficacy when using Chinese herbs along with enema treatments, emotional adjustment and dietotherapy. Professor Jiang's thoughts of therapy of UC is summarized from etiology, pathogenesis, dialectics and therapeutic medication.
