Aristolochic acid A and allatoin, who were known as the main contents in root of aristolochia debilis, were seperated and determined with HPLC methods in roots of arsitolochia debilis and aristolochia contorta which were collected from different places, respectively. The peak area were linear with the concentration of aristolochic acid A and allatoin determined over the range 20.8----104.014 g/ml (r = 0.9998) and 28.4 憲256.0 u gIml(r0.9998),and the average recoveries of the two contents in roots of aristolochia debilis and aristolochia contorta were 97.0%(RSD=2.4%) and 97.6%(RSD4 .4%), respectively. The two methods were both easy and accurate. It showed that there were less aristolochic acid A and more allatoin in roots of aristolochia debilis than in roots of aristolochia contorta and the variety were significent. The two crude drugs were also compared on analgesic effects and anti-inflammation effects. It was found that after the two crude drugs being extracted in alcohol, the acetic acidinduced number of writhing in mice were lowered and the ear edema of the2mice were inhibited. It showed the origins of the two crude drugs had an effect on the two pharmacologic effects. There were no varity between roots of aristolochia debilis and aristolochia contorta on analgesic effects but significent variety on anti-inflammation effects. All of the studies were useful to cocluding that weather root of aristolochia contorta could take the place of root of aristolochia debilis.
