Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (LSCM) is now established as a valuable tool for obtaining high resolution images of a variety of biological specimens. With the aid of 3D visualization on LSCM images, the researchers can observer the surface structures in the specimens or the internal structures of the specimens more clearly. The texture-based visualization method is adopted to realize the real-time 3D reconstruction on the PC, which enables the real-time interaction. An interactive transfer function is obtained through analyzing optical properties of LSCM images, so that the researchers can enroll in exploring the LSCM data set by altering rendering parameters. Thus the interactive volume rendering algorithm on the PC is implemented.Applying the interactive volume rendering algorithm as the core technology and combining other computer visualization and image processing technologies, a way of visualizing the volume data obtained by confocal microscopy has been set up. Related techniques include confocal data preprocessing, rendering the specimens' surface structure by the marching cube algorithm, rendering the specimens' internal structure by the interactive volume rendering algorithm, 4D dynamic visualization and a series of interactive technologies. Furthermore a system dataset is built to manage volume data, preprocess results, rendering results and analytic results. Thus confocal microscopic image 3D visualization and analysis system is set up.
