ObjectiveBerberine is a basic chemical component of the Chinese herb, Coptis chinensis Franch (coptis), considered to be useful in treating some diseases of the cardiovascular system. In this study, we observe the effect of berberine on the expression of IL-6, TNF-α, ICAM-1 and CRP after ballon injuring carotid artery in the rabbits and study the effect and mechanism. Methods30 rabbits were adjustably bred for 1 week, bread in 18℃-22℃ and were randomly divided into four groups: control group(n=6), model group (n=6),berberine group(n=9) and simvastatin group(n=9).The control group were untreated with medicine after ballon injure, the model group were treated with NS 5ml/kg.d intraperitoneal injection (ip), the berberine group received with berberine 2.5mg/kg.d received intraperitoneal injection and the simvastatin group were received with Simvastatin 3.3mg/kg.d by gastric gavage respectively after carotid artery ballon injury .The blood sampale of vein 4ml from each one rabbit were collected from the vein in ear of rabbit in 3 , 6, 10 days after operation.Radioimmunoassay was used to detect serm levels of IL-6 and TNF-α, and the concentration of ICAM-1 and CRP was detect by ELISA. Result(1) the serum levels of IL-6 in model group is significantly higher than berberine group(6744.77 ± 1516.0 pg/ml vs 4117.84 ± 996.59 pg/ml,P<0.01), control group (6744.77±1516.0pg/ml vs 3912.73 ± 1280.1pg/ml,P<0.01) and simvastatin group(6744.77±1516.0pg/ml vs 3609.1 ± 1202.75 pg/ml,P<0.01) in 10 days after ballon injury. (2) the TNF-α levels in model group is significantly higher than control group(103.16 ± 44.07ng/ml vs 50.92 ± 12.78ng/ml,P<0.05)and berberine group(103.16± 44.07 ng/ml vs 48.92 ± 16.95ng/ml,P<0.01) in 3 days after ballon injury, significantly higher than control group(106.81 ± 40.77 ng/ml vs 51.95 ± 11.48 ng/ml,P<0.05) in 6 days and significantly higher than control group(126.63 ± 48.79ng/ml vs 51.23 ±13.43 ng/ml,P<0. 01) and simvastatin group(126.63 ±48.79 ng/ml vs 71.77 ± 37.07 ng/ml,P<0.05) and berberine group(126.63 ±48.79 ng/ml vs 79.23 ± 29. 48ng/ml, P<0.05) in 10 days after ballon injury. (3) The ICAM-1 levels in model group is significantly higher than control group(0.277 ± 0.018 ng/ml vs 0.229 ± 0.040ng/ml,P<0.05), simvastatin group(0.277 ± 0.018ng/ml vs 0.242 ± 0.033 ng/ml,P<0.05) and berberine group (0.277 ± 0.018 ng/ml vs 0.223 ± 0.025 ng/ml,P<0. 01) in 6 days after ballon injury, in 10 days after ballon injury the ICAM-1 levels in model group is significantly higher than berberine group(0.274 ± 0.085 ng/ml vs 0.195 ± 0.11 ng/ml,P<0.05); (4) The CRP levels in model group is significantly higher than control group(0.172 ± 0.027 μ g/ml vs 0.120 ± 0.01 μg/ml, P<0.01; 0.163 ± 0.035 μg/ml vs 0.130 ± 0.03 μ g/ml, P<0.05;0.159 + 0.036 μg/ml vs 0.115 ± 0.014 μ g/ml,P<0.01) and berberine group (0.172 ± 0.027 μg/ml vs 0.136 ± 0.031 μ...
