Purpose:To evaluate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase - 7mRNA and its clinical significance in recurrence, metastasis and prognosis for patients with esophageal carcinoma. Methods:The MMP-7 was measured by using real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction during the follow up in 82 patients with esophageal carcinoma. The outcomes were then compared with 40 controls. Results:Among 82 cases, the positive rate of MMP-7mRNA was 37.8%.MMP-7mRNA expression was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis, blood metastasis and clinical stages. For 28 recurrent patients,we monitored 15 cases for 3 months of the average follow up.The MMP-7mRNA expressed previous to the imaging diagnosis for 3 to 6 months in five patients,it appeared in the same time in eight of them and two cases did not expressed MMP-7mRNA when imaging diagnosis were made. Conclusion:The expression of the MMP-7mRNA through RT-PCR is a sensitive and specific predictor in the recurrence, metastasis and prognosis for patients with esophageal carcinoma. It can provide reliable evidence in making treatment plan.
