Cortex Ailanthi is the dried barks of Ailanthus altissima(Mill.) Swingle(belongs to the family of Simaroubaceae), which is common used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, gynecological disease, hemafecia and dysentery and so on.With the guidance of the anti-tumour activity of complex prescription containing Cortex Ailanthi in previous paper. We took the methods of chromatogram and spectrum and so on to trace, separate and identify the active substance in order to enrich the compound species of Cortex Ailanthi, find the anti-tumour components with lower toxin and higher activity and lay the base of quality standards of Cortex Ailanthi.Four compounds were isolated from petroleum ether fraction of the Cortex Ailanthi. Which were identified asβ-sitosterol(Ⅰ), stigmasterol(Ⅱ), piscidinol A(Ⅲ) and 20-R-hydroxydammara-24-en-3-one (Ⅳ) on the basis of the spectroscopic analysis, physico-chemical property and comparison with the date reported. CompoundⅡ,ⅢandⅣwere isolated from Cortex Ailanthi for the frist time.According to the literatures, we took the pharmacological research of anti-tumour activity of piscidinol A against LoVo and CT-26 cells in vitro. Piscidinol A exhibited some anti-tumour activity of against LoVo and CT-26 cells in vitro. The contents of piscidinol A and 20-R-hydroxydammara-24-en-3-one was determined by HPLC, which method was extact and sensitive to control the quality standard of Cortex Ailanthi.
