Objectives:This study was designed to investigate the characteristics of thinking styles of the students who study on Chinese medicine in universities and the association between their thinking styles and academic achievement.Methods:Cluster sampling method was employed for this study in different grades and different professions in four universities, including the freshman and the seniors of Chinese medicine profession in Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Tianjin Medical University and Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the juniors of Department of Chemistry in Capital Normal University.There were 620 students in this study,549 students from three universities of Chinese Medicine were the main object of the study,71 students from the non-Chinese Medicine university were the main control group of this study.Under the guidance of Theory of Mental Self-Government, the thinking style of the students were measured by Sternberg Thinking Style Scale (Chinese version). All the data were analyzed by the software SAS 8.0 to find the differences of thinking styles in different universities, regions, sex and grades, and the correlation between the thinking style and the academic achievement of the students who study on Chinese Medicine professions.Results:1 No significant difference was found in the thinking styles of the students of Chinese Medicine professions in three different universities of Chinese Medicine.2 Significant differences were found in the thinking styles between the students of Chinese Medicine professions in three universities of Chinese Medicine and the students of the non-Chinese Medicine university, Capital Normal University. The difference showed in five different styles, which were monarchic, oligarchic, global, local and conventional thinking styles, and the scores of the students of the universities of Chinese Medicine were lower than scores of the students Capital Normal University.3 The date in the three universities of Chinese Medicine showed that significant differences were found in the Judicial and global thinking styles between the boys and girls, and the scores of the boys were higher than girls.4 The date in the three universities of Chinese Medicine showed that significant differences were found in the seven different thinking styles between the freshmen and the seniors. In legislative, monarchic, external and liberal thinking styles, the scores of the freshmen were higher than seniors. In oligarchic, internal and conventional thinking styles, the scores of the freshmen were lower than seniors.5 Comprehensive analysis of the seniors of the universities of Chinese medicine showed that the characteristics of the thinking styles of the students who study on Chinese medicine is:in the aspect of function, tend to legislative and executive styles; in the aspect of form, tend to hierarchic style; in the aspect of level, tend to global style; in the aspect of scope, tend to external style; in the aspect of lean, tend to liberal style.6 Study on typical thinking styles found that:most typical thinking styles are hierarchic, liberal and legislative styles; the small part typical thinking styles are monarchic, oligarchic and local styles; and typical thinking styles of anarchic did not exist.7 The association between the thinking styles and the academic achievement of the students who study on Chinese medicine was not significant.
