Encoding is, according to a certain principle, representing of meaning through combining or organizing of a series of related lingual signs, i.e., color, line or sound; while decoding means reading of that meaning, for instance, appreciation of animations, reading of novels, etc. As different signs are encoded and decoded according to different principles, animation role shaping signs are characteristic of their particular representation and thus visual delivery means based on their particular encoding and decoding principle.Based on the relationship between creator, work and appreciator, and with the help of encoding/decoding theory by Stuart Hall, this thesis, through comparison of successful American, Japan animation roles, probes into encoding/decoding principles of animation role shaping signs from the perspectives of semiotics, movie linguistics, study of communication, aesthetics, creator-audience-aesthetic psychology and study of social culture. It aims to find an optimizing and harmony organization of encoder, animation role and audience, which will be a more efficient methodology for animation roles to be made in China.Firstly, this thesis investigates decoding principle of animation role signs from the perspective of audience psychology. It probes into decoding stand and aesthetic psychology of audiences (decoder of role signs) who are aesthetic subjects while appreciating animation role images. Through an analysis of audience decoding psychology, the thesis finds that animation role sign, as a mass consuming product and representation of audiences'feelings, is an inevitable way that audience realize their perfect human dignity. In addition, roles, as representation of audiences, help audience realize their dreams through virtual stories that can not be realized in reality. Thus the reason why audiences are crazy about some animation stars is discovered, which will be a help for creation of China animation roles that are to be favored by audience.Secondly, this thesis analyzes encoding principle of animation role signs from the perspective of creator. It discusses impact of audiences'and encoder's nationality, environment (personal experience), spirits (especially the main cultural ideology) of the time on creator's mind and the constraints between them. It exemplifies the impact and the constraints represented in animation roles. Through the discussion and exemplification, the thesis intends to find an optimal encoding principle, which provides a mirror and thus a reflection of creation of successful animation roles.Finally, based on the above study, this thesis tries to discuss optimization of the encoding and decoding principle, including optimization of encoder vs. role signs, encoder vs. decoder (audience) and role signs vs. audience-aesthetic psychology. It argues that the optimization is in fact a problem of making the encoder, the roles and the audience (the creator, the work and the appreciator) more harmonized and more optimal. A solution of the problem will be a way to successful animation roles.
