In the History of the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire is a collection of the diverse ethnic groups, which leads to complex relations that ethnic conflicts and ethnic groups' interests intertwined. At present, many of the Middle East problems are left behind from the Ottoman Empire. During the history of the empire, the Christian minority is the most active one, which is also one of the most demanding minority issues. Thus, it plays a relatively important role during the development of the empire. This thesis concentrates on the Christian minority in the Ottoman Empire. It demonstrates vertically and horizontally two lines, and selects the vital role of the Christian minorities in the Empire development process. From the historical development of the vertical view, the position of Christian minorities of the Ottoman Empire had gone from low to high development process. The shift occurred when the infiltration of Western powers to the empire, by definition, when the first Capitulation was signed. The change is in sharp contrast with the development process of Jews in Ottoman Empire. From the lateral view, under the empire's "tolerance policy ", the Christian minorities through Millet, Ta'ifa, have got greater autonomy in internal management. They formed a complex relationship, which mixed both cooperation and confrontation. The Western factor is the most important role that affected Christian minority. Capitulation, protected rights and the problem of Jerusalem are three levers that make the influence in effect. Christian minorities played an important role in the economic, political and cultural development in the Ottoman Empire.Through vertical and horizontal two lines, focused, comprehensive multi-angle analysis, this thesis forms the following understandings on the Ottoman Empire and Christian minorities:The Policy of Millet, Ta'ifa that was practiced by Ottoman Empire had achieved good results. It is worth to be commended. Western influence is an important factor in the increase process of the minority status in the Ottoman Empire. Meanwhile, it is also a large obstacle in the process of their development. The shift from minority identity to the national identity leads to Christian minorities to seek independence. It is very important to maintain political and economic independence in foreign Affairs.
