The important tradition in Chinese figure painting is to describe the Folk custom. But this tradition in the development process of Chinese figure painting is a vague appearance in state. During the great development of the Sui and Tang dynasties, only a few artists described the folk custom. Compared to other themes in amount, size, and art expression, the genre painting before Song Dynasty looks single and weak. Most painter's eyes were still stagnating in Taoist, Deity, Kings and the Ladies, and the Scholar Officials. A few artists who describe the genre painting is limited to the countryside life. Far away to touch the broad area of this subject field. But in the Song Dynasty, the works to describe the custom suddenly increased. The painters who were keen on this subject, genre subjects, art skill and standards all became more extensive and complete. Compared with the literati paintings the song genre's strata of society, especially the people's life broadened horizons and depth. The rich and fascinating society supported the creation of the genre, large paintings, and the paintings created in the period were very vivid. Therefore, the flourish of the Song Dynasty genre due to the consideration of the city as the centre of the whole social and political, economic and cultural development is associated. Under the self-satisfaction atmosphere of the society at peace and prosperity, while to ruminate over the life, the genre had a new culture meaning and aesthetic value. Genre subjects were more profound and more vivid to reflect the Song Dynasty style and social characteristics than any other themes.The Song Dynasty genre:a gradual expansion of the painting theme and content, perfected the technique of expression, and allowed the genre subjects to mature. The influence of alternating dynasties and a variety of reasons after the Song Dynasty, the genre gradually declined. But did not disappear. It just changed form. The New Year pictures in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty proved popular, it continued the civil arts of genre painting.This article includes 7 parts:citations and four chapters in the text, conclusion and appendix.The first chapter of the first thing analysis to quote from the subject of title selections meaning, and the research information and methods of local or overseas, the basic framework of the thesis and those areas of the subject research and academic significance. The next chapter deals with the concept and development of " genre painting" before Song Dynasty, particularly in northern and southern Wei Jin and Sui Tang dynasties period.The third and fourth chapter to the point, Song Dynasty to promote the policy measures such as to advocate culture meanwhile to curb force, the ruling class love painting art very much and economic prosperity, these reasons to produce a significant impact to the genre painting. Chapter four use the master genre painting works to explain the development and arts characteristics in Song Dynasty. Chapter five deals with the gradually declined, the impact of the end of the Song Dynasty's genre painting and the influences of the future art.
