Imaginization is a fine feature of artistic works, and outstanding artistic works often introduce vivid images to convey the author's life experience. However, taking the German Theatre of 20th century into consideration, we found that the"de-imaginization"process has taken place in this period. The"de-imaginization"process refers to the degression of the element of images in theatre and the creative staff in theatre expresses their feelings and thinking directly to the audience with less and less images. There are different ways of presentation of"de-imaginization", and the images of the characters are the key point of theatre. In the"de-imaginization"process, four stages have been stressed: the expressionism drama, the epic theatre of Brecht, the "enigmatic, fragmentary pieces" of Heiner Müller, and the"Sprechstuecke"of Handke. Based on the analysis on the evolution progress of the"de-imaginization"of the German Theatre in 20th century, this dissertation put forward that the process of the"de-imaginization"is a process in which the characters give place to the players, the images presentation makes place for the direct expression, concrete regulations give place to indetermination, and virtual theatrical spaces make place for realistic life paces.
