As a famous detective literature author in the Taisho and showa Era, Edogawa Rampo has many readers in China. Almost all the plot of his works develop against the background which is Tokyo , the prosperous city of Japan and his works show the fantastic or exciting crime behind the magnificence and darkness. For some reasons, Chinese academy has neglected to develop Rampo study, and most researches just introduce his works simply, then the systematic analysis is absent. This kind of academic aphasia is in contrast to the population of his works in China. From 20s in the 20th Century to nowadays, Japan has never stopped their comment and study on Rampo in the over 90 years, the scholars contribute to the Rampo study from different point of view. In Japanese Rampo study, the research of the image'Flaneur'is a point. Many researches use The Two-Sen Copper Coin,Case of the Murder on D-Slope,Watcher in the Attic,The Strange Tale of the Panorama Islandand so on to analyse the image of'Flaneur'. Japanese research is very suggestive. Because of the lack of academic thesis about Edogawa Rampo, this dissertation will through the case study of Edogawa Rampo's works, and focus on one of Rampo's representative'Flaneur'work Watcher in the Attic,to analyze this work together with his other pieces.Based on the method of close reading, to inspect the visual culture in the civil space from the view of civil culture; to investigate the reason that'Flaneur'came into existence in the Taisho Era in the 20th Century through the social investigation;to be based on the method of influential study of comparative literature to narrative the influence of Tanizaki Junichiro to Edogawa Rampo and the similarity of their works;to be based on the visual power theory of Faucault to difine the visual experience of'Flaneur'.Chapter One explains the study's vaule; to summarize the spread, translation and study status of Edogawa Rampo's works in China and Japan; to introduce Edogawa Rampo's life and his works.Chapter Two focuses on Edogawa Rampo's works ,especially three representative civil space in Watcher in the Attic——Café, Asakusa and cinema to analyze the character of these space, to explore the modern visual experience hidden inside the space.Chapter Three investigates the social element of the birth of'Flaneur';to compare the image of'Flaneur'in Tanizaki Junichiro's Secret and Watcher in the Attic to point out that Watcher in the Attic is some kind continuity of the visual theme of Secret ; to change the Attic into Panopticon to emphasize the unilateral visual power of'Flaneur',and to use the only blind spot of'Flaneur'in the space–the alarm to discuss time consciousness of'Flaneur'and the ambiguous of the image of Akechi Kogoro. This dissertation mainly use the method of the social theoretical investigation of civil culture ,Benjamin's'Flaneur'theory and Faucault's micro-power theory, focusing on the most famous Flaneur Goda Saburo as the main object of observation in Watcher in the Attic from Edogawa Rampo's works ,and analyzing the relative civil space and the character's visual mechanism to expore the particularity of'Flaneur's spirit.
