William Somerset Maugham's literary achievement is mainly on novel writing, with The Moon and Sixpence and The Razor's Edge being his most famous novels which are mostly commended by the critics in mental realm. To get further understanding of Maugham's literary works, this paper discusses the attachment between the main content of the two novels and A. Schopenhauer's philosophy.This thesis can be divided into three chapters.The first chapter introduces William Somerset Maugham and A. Schopenhauer's life career respectively and gives analysis on the attachment between their life experiences and novel writing for finding their writings'subjective origins.The second chapter gives specific analysis of the relationship between Maugham's novels and A. Schopenhauer's philosophy through close reading. The three sections of this chapter discusses the painful life willing, insensible knowledge after the collapse of the rational support and the ultimate meaning of human existence respectively to trace the Schopenhauer's philosophy in Maugham's novels.The third chapter mainly discusses the common consciousness of anti-traditional ethics of these two authors. Taking the ethic option as the basis aspect, this chapter begins with the hero's attitudes analysis toward life and love, and gives conclusion on the attachment the Schopenhauer's philosophy and Maugham's novels.
