| The topic of functions and usages of adverb jiu has actually been subject for enquiries by many scholars of Chinese linguistics for many years. The meaning of adverb jiu can be divided into several sub-classes. Because of its semantic complexity, there are many diverse classifications according to different researches, and it is difficult to distinguish the meaning ofjiu and its context. This thesis has made a comprehensive research of the use on its contemprorary usages and meaning, and great efforts to make a distinction between the meaning ofjiu and its context, which is also focused on finding out the similarity of its sub-classes based on the theory of cognitive linguistics.Elementary Chinese textbooks have a varity of explanation of adverb jiu, and the explanations are vague and have little relevance with contexts, which is part of reason for why the error rate of adverb jiu is high in foreign students'writtings, no matter beginner and intermediate, or the advanced.First, the thesis has made a compariation of explanation of adverb jiu in four textbooks, points out problems of textbooks and gives corresponding suggestion. Taking consideration of semantic analysis, second language acquisition theory and pragmatic function of the teaching materials, a clearer and more effevtive explanation is expected to achieve. |
