Despite the significant improvement in the overall quality of Chinese textbooks for overseas learners, less attention has been paid to the pictorial functions and values in these textbooks, leading to generally insufficient uses of illustrations. Moreover, the casual insertion of illustrations and the unmatched use of pictures and text descriptions severely affect the extent to which the textbooks are recognized. This thesis is aimed to discuss the effectiveness issues of textbook illustrations based on the analysis of pictorial functions. In other words, we intend to explain the auxiliary functions of illustrations in Chinese textbooks for overseas learners on the basis of generally recognized pictorial functions through the case study of pictorial uses in textbooks at home and abroad. We recognize that in terms of assisting recognitions the illustrations in textbooks may consist of the following four functions, i.e., the attention function, the retention function, the representation, function, and the organization function. In this thesis, the problems in the design and use of illustrations in Chinese textbooks are analyzed by case-studying some existing textbooks in terms of the above pictorial functions. We suggest the principles of consistence, clearness, authenticity, amusement, artfulness in designing and using illustrations in textbooks. This thesis may be valuable in evaluating whether the illustrations used and to be used are effective in vivifying the textbook pages, enhancing the attractiveness of contents and assisting the readers'recognition.
