"Defamiliarization"is the core concept of Russian Formalism, which was presented by Victor Shklovsky in 1917. The notion of"defamiliarization"further explores the key question about what art does to and for life: Art is to enable us to see objects afresh and then restore our feelings for life by its unusual forms and expressions. To achieve a better understanding of this notion, the relevant theories of Aristotle's and Hegel's, together with Wordsworth and Shelley's poetry, are introduced to this thesis.According to Russian Formalism, translation distinguishes itself from non-literary translation by the distinctive nature of literature. That's to say, what makes specific works become literary works is"literariness". It usually comes from the form of the work, especially the defamiliarized form. For this reason, the authors and the translators prefer those unusual narrative techniques and original expressions. Defamiliarization is not only what writers seek for but also what readers expect. What's more, it is a force to promote the development in literature. Therefore, as for the translators, whether a translated work is successful lies in how they deal with the defamiliarization devices in the original text into their translations.This thesis starts from introducing the basic notions of Russian Formalism and then moves to the core notion of"defamiliarization". It explores the necessity for translators to represent the defamiliarized form in the target language, which is determined by two factors: the characteristic of literature and the responsibility of the translators, and also it finds out that there exist two factors which play a key role in possibility of representation of defamiliarization in literary translation: the common core among different languages and readers'capacity for accepting new expressions.Based on the theory, this thesis chooses the Chinese novel HongLouMeng, together with its two versions: the one translated by David Hawkes entitled The Story of the Stone and the other by the Yangs entitled A Dream of Red Mansions, to analyze the defamiliarization devices and their representation in literary translation.This thesis attempts to illustrate and manifest defamiliarization at the phonetic, lexical and syntactic level, especially rhetorical devices in the two translated versions to reveal the esthetic feature of defamiliarization.In theory, it is necessary to represent the defamiliarization in literary translation and also possible to represent it in a large scale practically. However, there exists the limitation in representation of defamiliarization in literary translation. Accordingly, the thesis analyses the reason rooted from and offers some further suggestions for translators in the literary translation field. It requires the translators to employ proper strategies to achieve representation of defamiliarization. Of course, though the strategies vary from the changing historical background, the translators should attach much stress on the defamiliarization devices and then probing into a further study on how to represent defamiliarizaton in a better way in literary translation.
