The Theater of the Absurd is a dramatic form born in France in the 1950, and became popular in the 1960. it is the fruit of western modern literature, which abandons rational reasoning and rational method in order to fully express the absurdity and meaninglessness of the human condition of modern world. This trend uses an absurd form to convey the absurdity , thus achieves unity between form and content. The study of the Theater of the Absurd usually concentrates on the works of Samual Beckette, Eugene Ionesco, etc, while only gives a passing mention to Edward Albee, the American representative of this artistic trend. This article puts the limelight on Edward Albee, because he fathered the so-called The Theater of the Absurd with American Characteristics. While analyzing his indebtedness to the European Absurdists, this article puts emphasis on his departure from this trend. Through the analysis of Albee acceptance and rejection of the ideas of European Absurdists his attempt and departure from his European counterparts, the article tries to show the aesthetic effects of Albee art, thus his contribution to the American theater.
