Tian Han was a trailblazer in contemporary Chinese opera and Chinese opera reform. He was an outstanding dramatist, literary author, and poet. He was also a key contributor to early Chinese film and Chinese revolutionary music.Throughout his life he was a candid, talented, and passionate dramatist. He believed that simple honesty could overcome any kind of evil. He was a true lover of art even when he didn't fully understand the world of politics. His works were intensely patriotic and had a tough quality of masculinity to them. From 1913 to 1967. Tian Han wrote more than ten million words of Chinese opera, drama, poetry, film, and essays. His most famous work was "Guan Hanqing," which best expressed his own character and personal experience. This thesis will explain the major contributions that Tian Han has made to the development of contemporary Chinese opera, particularly focused on his theory and works.Tian Han's theory of Chinese opera can be divided into three periods. The period surrounding the May Fourth Movement, the period encompassing the war against Japan, and that following the founding of the People's Republic of China. Tian Han deeply respected the art of Chinese opera, and made continual contributions to its reform. During each period, he was the key promoter of reform in Chinese opera theory. In his career, he wrote 27 separate works of Chinese opera, with the periods of the war against Japan and after the founding of the People's Republic being his most prolific. In his early works he focused on the character of the hero. His later works focused on women. The most important shared features of all his characters are their strength and fortitude.Tian Han made a huge contribution to all aspects of Chinese opera-not all of which can be dealt with in these pages. This thesis therefore will focus on the two aspects described above. It is hoped that this thesis, following a logical exposition, based on detailed and accurate materials, will successfully introduce this modern-day Guan Hanqing-Tian Han-through his theory and works.
