This paper deals with the topic problem in Chinese. First, it discusses the relationship between discourse and syntax and indicates that discourse grammar precedes syntax. In other words, syntactic constituents are the results of syntacticization of discourse constituents.Topic, as one of the main constituents of Chinese sentence, is also syntacticized from a discourse constituent. The paper believes that in a topic-prominent language, the more the passive construction is used, the more perfect the function of the passive marker is,the weaker the feature of topic-prominence of the language will be. Under this prerequisite, the paper describes the diachronic change of passive constructions in Chinese and explains the emergence, development and perfection of passive markers in Chinese passive constructions. Therefore, it concludes that the feature of topic-prominence in Chinese has been weakening.
