The fixing a name's reference is an ancient and ever new, important topic for Logical Philosophy. It has a long research history in both China and West, particularly hi Modern West, the problem is progressively led into a far-reaching study and presents three factions of theories. This dissertation tries to give a brief review to the origin of the topic, put emphasis on the review of essential thought of three factions of theories in Modern West, analyse the developing feature of the views on fixing a name's reference in Modern West, and put forward author's own preliminary opinions at last.The paper consists of three parts:Part One An ancient and ever new, important topic forLogical Philosophy 梩he question of fixing a name's reference. The fixing a name's reference is a knernel question of name theory, which having been probed into by both philosophical logicans and linguistic philosophers. During the history of Loglics in ancient and modern China, it was important question studied by many logicans and philosophers, and they got certain achievements in their research. In West, it having been valued and researed since ancient Greece, particularly in modem times, has scored great successes and presents three factions:"the theory of description", " the theory of historic causality " and " the contextual theory" .Recently, people's research work of it is continued, but it is hard to reach a consensus.Part two Three schools of theories and the developing features of views on fixing a name's reference in Modem West. Viesws on fixing a name's reference in Modern West presents three schools of theories. " The description theory " argues that a name's denotation is fixed by it's meaning given by the related decriptions. "The theory of historic causality" deems that the fixing a name's reference is accomplished through a proper historic causality chain. " The contextual theory" holds that a name's reference is fixed by givencontextual factors during the using of a name. This part gives a brief review to three schools of theories above, and then puts forward five developing features of the views on fixing a name's reference in Modern West as a whole: it has a transformation from a real world to a possible world in domain of a name's reference ;it shifts internal context to external context in context of a name's reference; it varies in grounds of fixing a name's denotation from theories of a name's reference fixed by practice activities; It's aim at fixing a name's reference converts absolute fixing views to relative fixing views; it modifies from resolutely excluding psychologism reference to returning of psychologcal intention in the medium of fixing a names reference .In a certain sense, these developing features can be summed up to changeover of contextual concept. Part three The fixing a name's reference is not a interacting course with many compound factors excepting contexts. In view of many kinds of expressions which constitute a name and their internal difference of fixing their references, contextual factors are the crux factor that determining whether a expression acts as a name and their referring intensity. There are many compound factors affect referring activities. This part analyses the influence on fixing a name's reference of five factors among them, which are referring subject, background of languages which a name gets it's meaning, language regulations of referring, referred object and several links of referring activities. Finally, author expounds the view of context is the key factor of fixing a name's reference from three aspects of differentiating a name's intrinsic connotation from it's extrinsic connotation, the relation between a name's glossarial sense and it's pragmastic meaning and the activities of fixing a name's reference.
