The French Lieutenant's Woman introspects and renovates the Victorian society and its literary tradition in modernistic views through narrating a romantic story in Victorian age. This thesis analyzes it through three aspects: (l)existentialist essence, (2)feminist practice and the limitation of masculinity, (3)the coalition of literary tradition and postmordernistic formal innovation. The author tries to reveal the implication of the novel and its artistic innovations, and at the same time explore some enlightenment on the combination of literary tradition and modernism.
