Eugene O'Neill, who was regarded as "the father of American Tragedy" wrote about 50 plays in his lifetime. He made much use of the excellent Greek tragedies and also inserted the current problems of his days into the inner world of his characters. In this way,he fully represented the spiritual crisis of human beings and the predicament of traditional ethics through fine description of man's psychology and sufferings. The author of this essay intended to show the tragic tension of Eugene O'Neill and find out how the tragic tension was formed by analyzing his master piece " Mourning Becomes Electra" and other major plays of Eugene O'Neill.
