Bernard Malamud,a famous Jewish American writer,is considered the most powerful writer in Jewish American Literature.Throughout his novel,Malamud describes Jews and the Jewish living background by showing us the experiences of American Jews in American society and the practice of their Jewish law. In his masterpiece novel,The Assistant, the central character,Morris Bober,is a hero,a saviour and a sufferer. The novel also traces the knotty path of Frank Alpine's moral growth as he absorbs the goodness of Morris. All the characters Malamud portrays reflect the theme of the novel and stress the value of suffering. The Assistant owes a great deal to Malamud's skillful writing techniques and artistic style.
