| Being a traditional as well as an innovative playwright,Arthur Miller produces a series of psychological realistic plays, which paint a landscape of the interior world of the human being, reflect the society, and probe some philosophical and social problems at large. This thesis aims to discuss the dramaturgy, both of realism and of expressionism, with which Arthur Miller reveals the inner world of his characters, and to present the two structural forms of stylistic variation in his drama. The paper consists of four parts:1. a general comprehensive introduction of Miller's psychological realistic plays;2. a discussion on the dramatic techniques utilized to externalize characters' inner psyche;3. an illustration of two structural forms-the traditional plot structure and the modern psychological structure;4. a study as to the role which the auxiliary stage devices such as music, lightning, and stage setting play in helping present characters' inner world and highlight the themes, and so forth. |
