Beloved is one of Toni Morrison's masterpieces. It was published in 1987 and received the Pulitzer for fiction in 1988. In 1993 ,Toni Morrison was awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming the first African American woman writer to win this distinction.Morrison wrote Beloved in an imagistic mode, slipping from present to past on almost every page . Beloved presents several characters' experiences and memories:the story emerges as we encounter everyone's past through memory and piece together their different accounts of their experiences in Slavery and Reconstruction. The controlling of time played a very important role in this novel. The author uses rhetoric, such as simile, metaphor, personification, antithesis etc.,giving deep impression to the readers.Morrison's description of the characters and the place are highly lyrical,The author also uses alliteration, assonance, repetition, rhyme etc.,lending a sensuous rhythm to Beloved . The using of the Negroes' Music ( Spiritual and Blues) is another characteristic of the novel. Morrison takes advantage of her lyricism ,symbolism and rhetoric, making readers feel the beauty of truth in this novel.
