Peoples have many beliefs about languages. One important one is that 'good' usage involves clarity and precision. However, there is plenty of fuzziness in the communication. Hedges-the most common and typical fuzzy language-are words whose job it is to make things fuzzier. Hedges are not empty fillers, inserted by speakers to give processing time. They are deliberately chosen for their contribution to the communicative message. The essay mainly discusses the definition, the category, the semantic features and the pragmatic features of hedges. In demonstration, scores of examples have been quoted for illustration. It begins with an introduction to fuzziness linguistics and hedges. The chapter of hedges,in view of the definition and category, illustrates 'approximators' and 'shields'. Then, two test results and ten histograms are demonstrated that the approximations as designating intervals of numbers are symmetrical about the exemplar number given. A chapter is devoted to elaborate the grade of membership. Special attention is given to discuss the semantic features and pragmatic features of hedges. The essay finishes with the use of hedges in varied settings and for varied purposes. Some new claims in this essay are significant in both theoretical and practical sense. The study of hedges is a broad and fruitful area of language study with considerate potential for further work.
