This paper focuses on the double-object construction which consists of a bivalent verb and three arguments. The major theoretical issues of the paper are summarized as follows:Firstly, We argue that those verbs which can form a double-object construction are an open category. Many bivalent verbs can form double-object constructions which can contain three kinds of argument : patient argument, material argument and result argument. What's more, double-object construction is a continuum and prototype category which has its typical members and atypical members.Secondly, the double-object construction can be divided into two types: extro-orientational sentence and intro-orientational sentence by the moving direction of Direct object. The cognitive features of the two types are very different and it exerts great influence on its syntactic features. The extro-orientational sentence can contain patient argument and result argument, but it impels material argument .The intro-orientational sentence can contain patient argument and material argument ,but it impels result argument.Thirdly, based on the constructional meaning of double-object construction, we reclassify the verbs which can form a double-object construction. We divide it as strong extro-orientational verb, weak extro-orientational verbs, exocentric verbs, nondirectional verbs , endocentric verbs, intro-orientational verbs. The prototype construction meaning throws light on the ambiguity of weak extro-orientational verbs, exocentric verbs. The meaning also influences the emergence of suppositional object and understanding of favoring role and favored role.At last, We study the argument of double-object construction in syntactic and prosodic ways.
